A native of Brooklyn, NY, Jamila A. Sockwell is a lyric soprano with a vast range of experience in the performing arts. Having performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ms. Sockwell appeared on Late Night w/ David Letterman and was a featured soloist at the grand opening ceremony of the new 7 World Trade Center in New York City.
She debuted with Regina Opera, as Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro then later returned to portray Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus and Mimi from Puccini’s La Boheme. At Amato Opera, she was featured as Donna Anna from Don Giovanni and reprised her portrayal of Countess Almaviva. Appearing with the North Jersey Philharmonic and she was a featured soloist in Mahler’s Second Symphony with the South Shore Symphony. Some of Ms. Sockwell’s other operatic repertoire includes Donna Elvira, Alice Ford and most recently Violetta Valery. She has made a concert appearance with Robert Bass and the Collegiate Chorale as the Soprano Soloist in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy in C Minor.
Ms. Sockwell has studied with such acclaimed teachers and coaches such as Joyce McLean and Marshall Williamson (Juilliard School), Martina Arroyo, Nico and Carol Castel, Nancy Stokes-Milnes, Wayne Sanders, Howard Watkins, Maestro Steven Crawford and Maestro Willie A. Waters. She presently studies with Ms. Jane Bunnell.
